Burial Rites
“To know what a person has done, and to know who a person is, are very different things.”
Based on a true story, Burial Rites is a deeply moving novel about personal freedom: who we are seen to be versus who we believe ourselves to be, and the ways in which we will risk everything for love.
The Price of Salt
“I know what they'd like, they'd like a blank they could fill in. A person already filled in disturbs them terribly.”
First published in 1952, Patricia Highsmith's story of romantic obsession may be one of the most important, but still largely unrecognized, novels of the twentieth century.
The Woman Destroyed
“What an odd thing a diary is: the things you omit are more important than those you put in.”
With The Woman Destroyed, Simone de Beauvoir explores the everyday life struggles of three women at three different stage of their life: young adult, middle age women and mature women.
Kindred
“Repressive societies always seemed to understand the danger of "wrong" ideas.”
Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred was first published in 1979. It tells the incredible story of Dana, travelling through time. Though it’s speculative fiction utilising time travel, much of its focus is showing a glimpse into the past, and the way the author incorporated so much about society into such a well paced story is nothing short of masterful.
